Integration and coexistence among different people: the value of a music festival in a refugee camp

The Tuimaini Festival is a cultural and artistic event held in the Dzaleka refugee camp in Malawi. This festival is one of a kind, as it takes place inside one of the largest refugee camps in the country, and has as its main objective to empower refugees through art, culture and creative expression.

The festival was founded in 2015 by Trésor Nzengu Mpauni “Menes la Plume”, a Congolese poet and musician residing in the camp. “Tuimaini” means ‘hope’ in Swahili, and the festival reflects this idea by providing a platform for refugees to share their stories, talents and cultures with the outside world. Through music, drama, dance, poetry and other art forms, participants are able to express their identities and realities, contributing to the emotional and social well-being of the camp community.

The Tuimaini Festival not only attracts refugees, but also artists and visitors from around the world, promoting cultural exchange and fostering greater global understanding and solidarity. Over time, the festival has become a symbol of resilience and hope, showing how art can be a powerful tool for social and personal transformation.
