Food: the driving force behind social transformation in Bizkaia

This year’s theme was not chosen at random, but rather as the result of a thoughtful, collective process spearheaded by BBK Kuna Institutoa, the strategic think tank led by Daniel Innerarity and made up of influential voices from across the region. From there, priority is given to issues with the capacity for profound transformation and driving force in society. And for the first time, BBK Kuna has decided to align all its initiatives around one major common issue: food.

Few topics resonate so deeply on an individual and collective level. In Bizkaia, eating is not just a necessity: it is an act of identity, a shared language, a way of caring, celebrating, and even reconciling. Here we resolve our differences around a table, weave community between spoonfuls, and recognize gastronomy as a mirror of who we are. That is why food is much more than an economic sector: it is a powerful social cohesive force, a source of cultural pride, and a gateway to urgent conversations about health, sustainability, inclusion, and the future.

BBK is no stranger to this reality. With more than three decades of commitment to the primary sector through initiatives such as BBK Azoka, raising the profile and value of the work of our farmers, and with its firm commitment to sustainable gastronomy as the cornerstone of its Social Work, the foundation has been charting a solid course that legitimizes this new stage. Today, this commitment is also amplified by BBK Klima, a project that promotes new forms of responsible production and consumption, strengthening the value chains between producers and distributors in the region.

For all these reasons, food is not only the chosen theme: it is the perfect thread to inaugurate this new phase, in which BBK Kuna invites the society of Bizkaia to rethink its present and build, from the most everyday aspects, the futures we desire.
