ProtopIA: Future perspectives
Artificial intelligence (AI) is transforming all sectors, and food is no exception. To analyse this impact, BBK Kuna and Innuba have organized ProtopIA, a key meeting to explore how generative AI can help us build a more sustainable and innovative food future.
Below, we summarize the main reflections and conclusions of a day-session that seeks to put technology at the service of people and the planet.
What is ProtopIA and why is it important?
ProtopIA is a think tank promoted by BBK Kuna and Innuba to analyse the impact of generative AI on food. Its importance lies in the need to anticipate challenges and promote the responsible use of technology. It is a space for collective reflection that underlines BBK Kuna’s commitment to social innovation, seeking solutions to build a more sustainable and equitable food future for Bizkaia.
Exploring “Augmented Organizations”
A central concept of the meeting was ‘augmented organizations’, presented by David Alayón, from Innuba. This vision proposes that AI should not replace humans, but rather amplify their capabilities. In food, this means using technology to enhance creativity and critical thinking, while always focusing on the human factor. The discussion focused on how to prepare teams, adapt job profiles and ensure that this technological transition is inclusive.
The “Futurathon”: designing future scenarios with AI
The day went from theory to practice with a ‘futurathon’, a dynamic session where participants designed future scenarios for the sector.
It is the first of three events of this type, which we will develop together with companies and entities in the sector.
This exercise identified opportunities, such as crop optimization, along with risks such as the digital divide. The session raised crucial questions: how do we ensure an ethical use of AI? What human skills will remain irreplaceable? and how to maintain authenticity in an increasingly technological market?
Three key reflections for the future
The meeting brought key considerations to the table which will guide the next steps:
Taxation and equity: if AI generates such significant economic value, how should it contribute fiscally to ensure a fair redistribution of its benefits in society?
The human value: it is vital to protect and foster skills such as creativity, critical thinking and empathy. In an automated environment, these capabilities will be the real driver of innovation.
Limits of technology: we must establish a healthy relationship with AI, using it as a tool that empowers us without falling into a dependency that limits our autonomy and decision-making capacity.
Conclusion
ProtopIA has marked a fundamental starting point. The idea of “augmented organizations”, where technology amplifies human capabilities, is consolidated as the roadmap to follow. The road to a technology-enhanced, but human-centred food future has just begun.
From BBK Kuna, we reaffirm our commitment to continue activating future inspirations for Bizkaia. We invite you to continue to be part of this conversation and reflect with us: How can we, together, build a smarter, fairer and more sustainable food system for all?
The next ProtopIA and futurathons sessions will be held on 30 September and 28 October. We will advance all the information on our channels.
